Aircraft interior lighting holds crucial significance in an aircraft. It not just determines the overall ambience but also the convenience of the passengers. Besides, the lighting is also guided by various rules and regulations. Here is all that you need to know about it.
Different types of lights are required in aircrafts for different purposes. For instance, NVIS friendly lights are required for military aircrafts. On the other hand, cargo or freight aircrafts require Interior Utility Lights. Emergency Egress Lighting or Emergency seat mounted marker lights may also be required for some special aircrafts. For the passenger cabin, sidewall wash lights are used. These sidewall wash lights offer a forward facing and indirect lighting, so that the light does not blare on the passenger's eyes. In the earlier days, direct lighting was used in passenger cabins. These lights threw the light from the top of the sidewall with the light washing down along the panel. So, whenever the passengers used to look up, the light would fall directly on their eyes, which would add to the inconvenience. Apart from offering clear view and convenience to the passengers, these days aircraft lighting is also being used to create a feeling of increased space. More and more aircrafts are deploying lights that can emphasize on the interior features without straining the eyes of the passengers. It is for this reason that lighting in aircrafts now makes use of a light source along with a light lens and a light bezel. The light source is primarily an array of LEDs, which offers you some discretion as regards selecting the color and intensity of the light. The bezel used in the contemporary lighting system blocks the direct radiation so that there is no harmful effect to the passenger's eyes. Instead, the bezel, tries to move the light through the length which washes the light to a further distance. Another light setting that is popularly being used in aircrafts is the kick panel. These kick panels are installed at the floor level to illuminate the cabin floor. They also make use of indirect light sources so that the light does not jar into the eyes of the passengers. These kick panels help the passengers to know where can they keep their feet comfortably. The Aircraft Passenger Reading Lights is another key aspect. This basically refers to the signs that are usually in an aircraft to guide the passenger. Some such signs include 'Fasten seatbelt' and 'No smoking'. These signs need to be illuminated with the help of lights for the passengers to see them clearly. LEDs are used to display these signs. With all this, you are sure to be much better acquainted with aircraft lighting. Related Articles
